Chapter 3

The Infection-protection game and the evolution of cooperation

A public health dilemma results when individuals believe they can personally benefit by not taking health protective action that would benefit others. When individuals face a short-term incentive to avoid the costs associated with protective action they may decide not to protect against a virus. Unfortunately such “defection” can allow a virus to spread, thereby lowering the collective benefit available in the longer term. I model this problem as an evolutionary game, what I call an “infection-protection game.”
